Amy Bartlam “I personally installed it by myself,” Amy Sklar says of the vintage wallpaper tree that she used to design a room for Daisy when she was a baby. When it was time to make the room more teenager-friendly, they wanted to keep the sentimental installation. It features a 3D birdhouse with lights that lights up. All other elements, except for the Ferrick Mason fabric Roman shades that they agreed to use as a launch point, were replaced or rejigged.

The renovation involved painting the walls Benjamin Moore’s Healing Aloe and reupholstering a loveseat pullout in a Pindler Performance Velvet. It also included upgrading to a more shaped bed (by Jenny Lind, Crate & Kids). Sklar shared that Daisy and I wanted a room that could grow with us. We chose classic and neutral pieces to anchor the space, including the black bed, graphic rug and emerald-green loveseat. Then, we could add fun pops to color in other pieces that might change over time.
Sklar notes that the 16-year old, who is a student at a Los Angeles performing arts high school, wanted graphic elements to balance “the soft, pastel moments in her room.” The designer says she also required a desk and plenty of plants because she is a budding plant-mom. So they added several planters from Etsy and Target to the room.
Sklar loved weaving “an entire palette color and texture that reads young but feels fully realized, and completely transformed”. She didn’t need to spend a lot to get the look she wanted. The desk, drawers, chair, peg board and toy basket were all IKEA products, while the rug was a happy Urban Outfitters find.

Amy Bartlam “My favorite thing about the room is that she gravitated towards a bohemian feel that I had as a teenager,” Sklar says, pointing out the Amazon tarot wall hangings. She notes that they are “totally something I would have wanted in my room at her ages, and she chose them entirely on her own.” It was a wonderful moment of connection.
Take a look at the space before its transformation.
