Adding A Floating Shelf To A Window

Recently, we shared some videos of our bathroom on Instagram and many of you noticed an easy update we had made: a wooden, floating shelf in the window. This was a simple DIY project we had done on a whim and it was extremely affordable too! We wanted to show you the easy steps to make one yourself.

The window before we added the shelf had a deep sill (about 4 inches) which made it perfect for a 4-inch shelf. We didn’t want the shelf to stick out into the room, but if your sill is narrower, you can make it stick out a bit. It was also important that this window had frosted glass in it, which meant that no window treatments would interfere with the shelf. If your window needs covering (like in a bedroom or bathroom) this might not be a good option for you.

We had all the supplies on hand (including a scrap piece of butcher block) and only needed to purchase $2 in cove molding to make this project happen. The steps are simple: cut the wood shelf to size (ours measured 4″ deep and 28″ wide) and two pieces of cove molding to the depth of the window trim. Measure and mark the desired placement of the bottom of your shelf on each side of your window trim, then nail the cove molding into the window trim. Make sure to use a level to make sure the molding doesn’t slope forward or back. Add the wood shelf and check again for level. Nail it to the cove molding to keep it in place and caulk and paint the nail holes.

We love how the shelf turned out and highly recommend it if you have a room that could use some extra interest. If you’re looking for some more DIY shelf projects, we’ve got plenty of those.
