Does Bulb Wattage Determine Brightness?

Common misconception is that the only thing that determines how bright a bulb is its wattage. This is why you might have been using lower wattage bulbs to get more light.

Sometimes it can be difficult to find the right light bulb. All factors are important.

Are you having trouble finding bulbs that aren’t too bright? You should ensure that you read the label carefully if this is the case.

Many people believe that brightness is determined solely by wattage. You are likely to be in this category. However, watts are not a measure of brightness.

What does Watts measure?

Perhaps you remember the equation that determines watts from physics class. W=(A),(V). Watts represent increments in power. They are the result of amps being subject to the pressure of volts. A light bulb with a higher power consumption will consume more power than one that has a lower wattage. This does not necessarily correlate with bulb brightness.

Spoiler alert! Lumens are used to measure brightness, not watts.

Different types of bulbs draw different levels of power, depending on their individual brightness. LEDs are popular for drawing less power. LEDs draw less power, but they are still brighter than incandescent counterparts.

How to find a lower-light bulb

Check the lumens when looking for a low-light bulb. This is the most important information. Your power bill will be affected more by Wattage than brightness.

Consider LED and incandescent options. LED bulbs are more efficient and last for longer. Smart bulbs are also available. They can also change their color so that you can create any mood you wish.

Whatever type of bulb you choose, make sure you do your research so you know how many lumens are needed to light up your space.
