What can I do with Zip System structural sheathing to create a water- and air barrier?
Ben Bogie answers: A structural sheathing we use on the exterior of our building is Zip System, an integral water-and-air-resistive panel product. It replaces housewrap, which is stapled to the sides of the house and flaps in the breeze. This stuff is vulnerable to tears and holes.
The integrative panel product fulfills both a structural function and a barrier function. It is the structure that resists lateral forces such as racking, lateral movement and the weight of the building. And it protects us against water, which is our main concern. Because we have taped every seam on the panels, we also get a barrier. We get panel products that are strong enough to withstand water and provide air protection for our buildings.
